Tree roots near a house
By Glenn Broadbent 27 Mar, 2024
In the area of property management and maintenance, we often overlook one aspect that can lead to significant damage, the presence of improperly managed trees. Trees add beauty, shade, and value to properties, but when they are positioned too close to structures or are left unchecked, they can become more of a liability than an asset. This is where professional tree removal steps in as a crucial preventive measure against property damage.

Why Should I Use A Professional Tree Removal Company?

Trees are an essential part of our ecosystem, providing us with oxygen, shade, and natural beauty.

However, there are times when trees can become a hazard or a liability, and the need for professional tree removal arises. Professional tree removal is the process of cutting down and removing trees from a particular area.

While some may argue that cutting down trees is harmful to the environment, there are several benefits to professional tree removal.

Here are some important reasons to hire a professional tree removal.

Safety

Safety is indeed one of the paramount benefits of engaging professional tree removal services. When trees are left unchecked, they can pose significant risks, particularly if they are diseased, damaged, or in a state of decay. These conditions can weaken the structural integrity of a tree, making it more susceptible to falling during adverse weather conditions such as high winds and heavy rain. A falling tree or even a detached limb can cause substantial damage to structures, vehicles, and, most critically, people.

Professional tree removal companies bring a level of expertise and experience that is crucial for addressing these hazards effectively and safely. They have trained arborists who can assess the health and stability of trees, determining the best approach for their removal. These professionals are equipped to handle complex situations, such as trees that are entangled in power lines or those that are located in tight spaces between buildings.

Professional tree removal involves the use of specialised equipment such as chainsaws, cranes, and wood chippers. This equipment enables the safe cutting and dismantling of trees, regardless of their size and location. Professional services also include comprehensive safety protocols to protect the workers, bystanders, and surrounding property. For example, traffic control measures may be implemented for trees located near roads, and protective barriers can be used to safeguard nearby structures.

In addition to the immediate safety benefits, professional tree removal can also help prevent future hazards. For instance, removing weak or diseased trees can reduce the risk of them becoming breeding grounds for pests and fungi, which could spread to healthy vegetation. The removal process also includes the proper disposal of the tree, ensuring that it does not become a hazard itself, such as by obstructing pathways or decaying in a manner that attracts pests.

Lastly, professional tree removal companies often offer emergency services for urgent situations, such as trees that have been downed by storms and pose immediate threats. This rapid response capability is crucial for mitigating risks to safety and property in the aftermath of severe weather events.

The safety benefits of professional tree removal encompass not only the immediate removal of hazardous trees but also the prevention of future risks and the handling of emergency situations. This comprehensive approach ensures the safety and security of people, property, and the surrounding environment.

Prevent Property Damage

Preventing property damage is indeed a significant advantage of enlisting the services of professional tree removal companies.

Trees, while offering aesthetic and environmental benefits, can pose threats to nearby structures, particularly when they are improperly situated or left unattended.

One of the primary ways trees can cause property damage is through their root systems. As trees grow, so do their roots, often extending far beyond the visible canopy. If a tree is planted too close to a building, its roots can intrude into the structure's foundations, leading to cracks and structural weakening. This is particularly problematic with species known for aggressive root systems. Over time, such damage can compromise the integrity of a building, leading to costly repairs and, in extreme cases, evacuation for safety reasons.

Additionally, trees that grow too close to structures can cause damage in other ways. Branches can scrape against roofs, windows, and siding, leading to wear and tear that compromises the building’s exterior and can result in water leaks, insulation problems, and other issues. In the event of a storm, weak or dead branches can break off and fall, causing significant damage to roofs, cars, fences, and other property.

Professional tree removal services offer a proactive approach to preventing such damages. With their expertise, they can identify trees that pose a risk due to their proximity to structures or the nature of their growth. They have the equipment and techniques necessary to remove trees safely, ensuring that the process does not cause additional damage to the property. This includes safely lowering large branches instead of allowing them to fall freely and ensuring the tree's trunk is cut and removed without impacting nearby structures.

Professional services can include stump grinding and root removal, ensuring that the underground parts of the tree do not continue to grow and cause damage after the tree has been removed. This comprehensive approach addresses both the immediate and long-term risks posed by improperly located trees.

The preventive aspect of professional tree removal cannot be overstated. By addressing potential problems before they lead to significant damage, property owners can save substantial amounts of money in repairs and maintenance. This preventive measure also contributes to the overall safety and aesthetic of the property, enhancing its value and appeal.

Professional tree removal services play a crucial role in preventing property damage. By identifying and removing trees that pose risks to structures, these services help maintain the structural integrity of buildings, reduce maintenance costs, and protect the investment in the property. This proactive approach to tree management is an essential aspect of responsible property maintenance and safety.

Improve Street Appeal

Improving street appeal is an essential consideration for any property owner, whether they're looking to sell, rent, or simply enhance their living environment. The appearance of a property from the street, or its curb appeal, is the first impression it makes on visitors, prospective buyers, or passersby. Professional tree removal can play a significant role in enhancing this aspect by addressing issues related to trees that negatively impact the property's aesthetic and perceived value.

Trees that are diseased, damaged, or dead are not only safety hazards but also detract from the visual appeal of a property. They can give the impression of neglect, suggesting that other parts of the property may also be poorly maintained. This can lead to a decrease in property value and make it less attractive to potential buyers or renters.

Such trees can obscure architectural features, block natural light, and dominate landscaping in a way that detracts from the property’s overall appearance.

Professional tree removal services can address these issues by safely and efficiently removing trees that detract from the property's appeal. Once these undesirable trees are removed, the property can present a cleaner, more inviting appearance. This not only improves the view from the street but also opens up the space for more desirable landscaping options. With the removal of unsightly trees, property owners have the opportunity to redesign their outdoor spaces in ways that enhance the property's character and complement its architecture.

In addition to removing unsightly trees, professional tree services can also help in pruning and shaping remaining trees to enhance their beauty and health, further improving the property's street appeal. Well-maintained trees can add character and charm to the property, contributing positively to the neighborhood's overall aesthetic.

Improving street appeal through professional tree removal and maintenance can have a direct impact on property value. Properties with high street appeal tend to sell faster and at higher prices. Even if selling is not the immediate goal, enhancing street appeal can contribute to a sense of pride in ownership and enjoyment of the property.

A well-maintained landscape, starting with healthy and appropriately placed trees, can create a welcoming environment, contributing to a positive community atmosphere. It reflects well on the property owner and can even inspire neighbouring properties to undertake similar improvements, enhancing the overall appeal and value of the area.

Professional tree removal is a crucial step in enhancing the street appeal of a property. By removing diseased, damaged, or dead trees, property owners can significantly improve the aesthetic of their property, making it more inviting and potentially increasing its value. This process, combined with thoughtful landscaping and tree maintenance, contributes to a positive first impression and overall property appeal.

Prevent The Spread of Disease

Preventing the spread of disease and pest infestation within a landscape is crucial for maintaining the health and longevity of all plant life in the area. Trees that become diseased or infested with pests can act as catalysts for widespread environmental issues, affecting not just other trees but also shrubs, plants, and the overall ecosystem. The removal of such trees by professional services is a critical measure in mitigating these risks and safeguarding the health of the surrounding vegetation and habitats.

Diseases in trees can be caused by a variety of pathogens including fungi, bacteria, and viruses. Similarly, pests such as beetles, borers, and termites can infest trees, weakening them and making them more susceptible to diseases. Once a tree is infested or diseased, the problem can spread rapidly, especially if the pathogens or pests are airborne or can be transferred by animals, tools, or even wind and rain. This can lead to an outbreak that can devastate entire gardens, parks, or neighbourhoods, resulting in significant loss of tree cover and biodiversity.

Professional tree removal services are equipped to handle the delicate task of removing diseased or pest-infested trees safely and efficiently. They can diagnose the extent of the disease or infestation, determine the risk of spread, and decide on the best course of action. By removing the affected tree, they eliminate a major source of the pathogens or pests, significantly reducing the likelihood of spread.

Professionals can advise on and implement quarantine or treatment measures for surrounding trees to prevent further spread. They can also dispose of the diseased or infested wood in a manner that minimises the risk of spreading the pathogens or pests. This might include destroying the wood or treating it before removal from the site.

Preventative measures are also a significant aspect of professional tree care. After removing a diseased or infested tree, professionals can assess the health of remaining trees and apply preventive treatments to protect them from similar fates. This could include the application of fungicides, pesticides, or other treatments that deter pests and diseases, as well as recommending cultural practices that improve tree health and resistance to diseases and pests.

The preventive aspect extends beyond just treating other trees; it also involves educating property owners on the signs of tree diseases and pests, proper tree care, and maintenance practices. This education can empower property owners to take proactive steps in monitoring and maintaining the health of their trees, thereby preventing the onset and spread of diseases and infestations in the future.

The removal of diseased or pest-infested trees by professional services is essential for preventing the spread of disease and infestations in a landscape. This proactive measure, combined with the implementation of preventative practices, can protect the health of surrounding trees and plants, preserve local ecosystems, and maintain the aesthetic and ecological value of the area.

Free Up Space

Removing trees can free up space on your property for other purposes.

For example, you may want to build a new structure, create a garden, or expand your outdoor living area. By removing a tree, you can free up space to accommodate your plans.

There is no doubt that professional tree removal has several benefits, including safety, preventing property damage, improving curb appeal, preventing disease spread, and freeing up space.

If you have a tree or stump on your property that needs to be removed, it is important to hire a professional tree removal company to ensure that the job is done safely and efficiently.

Not only will you be protecting your property and the people on it, but you will also be contributing to the overall health and beauty of your community.

Tree removal is a very technical job.

The cost of removing a tree can vary depending on a number of factors, including the size of the tree, the location of the tree on the property, and the level of difficulty involved in removing the tree safely. In general, the larger the tree, the more expensive it will be to remove. Trees located in difficult-to-access areas or that are near buildings or other structures may also be more expensive to remove. Other factors that can affect the cost of tree removal include the need for specialised equipment or techniques, the presence of utility lines or other obstacles, and the need for debris removal.

Why do I need to remove my tree?

It would be great if tree removal and stump removal were never needed but unfortunately, there are a number of reasons why sometimes a tree will need to be removed or ‘tree lopping’, as it is sometimes called in Australia, is required.

Many of these tree removals are for safety reasons or tree failures but they can also be for aesthetic reasons or new developments, some examples of why Newcastle tree removal services are required include:

  • The tree is dead or in decline
  • The tree has too much rot, termite damage or fungi and is becoming unstable
  • The tree is damaging structures, buildings, utilities or paved areas.
  • The tree is obstructing a new proposed development
  • The tree is dropping large branches or is perceived as hazardous.
  • The tree is significantly blocking solar access to a property.
  • Emergency Storm Damaged Trees – Fallen trees in Newcastle.

The vast majority of our Newcastle tree removal clients are concerned about the safety of their trees and the inherent risks they pose to their property and family, which is the main reason for tree removal services.

This often intensifies after the frequent storm events that occur across the Hunter Valley over the summer months causing lots of fallen trees and emergency storm damage tree services.

Trees need to be monitored for safety defects regularly.

Many of these, such as dead wood removal and remedial tree pruning works for defected and decayed branches can be carried out to significantly reduce any risks without requiring any tree removal works.

Other than tree removal for safety reasons, the other main driving force for Kaptol Newcastle tree removal services is the construction of new developments that conflict with the existing trees onsite.

In many cases the tree removal and tree stump grinding required would be for low retention value trees but it is important to ensure that larger canopy significant trees are retained as much as possible.

How do you safely remove my tree?

There are four main ways to safely remove a tree from your property.

  • Manually using rigging techniques
  • Cherry Pickers or Elevated Platforms
  • Removing with the use of cranes
  • Clear Felling
Worker inspecting a tree

Manually, using rigging techniques.

This is the most common method we use for tree removal since many trees can be safely dismantled using ropes, pulleys, a lowering device known as a friction drum and a variety of rigging techniques.

Through the teamwork of the arborist and the ground crew controlling the ropes, each limb or branch is carefully lowered to the ground, cut up and carried away to be mulched with minimal impact to anything on the ground or surroundings.

This is also often the only tree removal method available if the tree is located too far away from a suitable location for a tower or crane.

Man inspecting a tree with a crane

Cherry Picker or Elevated Platform.

In some tree removals, it is too dangerous (i.e. near power lines, dead tree) or time-consuming (row of small trees to prune, deadwood) for our arborists to climb a tree that needs removing or lopping.

In this case an elevated platform or cherry picker can be used which allows the arborist to get to exactly where he wants and carefully dismantle the tree in small hand held pieces.

However, this method of tree lopping is often restricted by the access for the machinery itself.

Trimming a tree by Arborist
A crane removing a tree

Using a crane.

When tree removal involves particularly large or dangerous trees, or trees are in an awkward location, it is often more efficient and much safer to use a crane.

This can be an expensive operation depending on the size of the crane, but it is often compensated by the significant reduction in manpower and time required for tree removal.

Obviously there needs to be access for the crane to get near the tree and subsequently there are a number of types, typically ranging from 8 and 15 tonne all terrain mini cranes for tight access to large 50 and 80 ton cranes that generally stay on the road.

Another advantage of using a crane to aid with tree lopping is that the tree is lifted up and away from its location and then lowered elsewhere, often on the road, so there is no impact on the area surrounding the tree.

Backyard clearing of trees

Clear Felling.

If there is a large space on one side of a tree, and no obstacles, then clear felling a tree from the ground is always another option and is generally the fastest method of tree removal.

At Kaptol Tree Removal, our arborists use a variety of rigging techniques to make trees fall in directions they may not be leaning but it requires a high level of skill and experience to ensure this is always done safely.

Tree with gum leaves

How much does it cost to remove my tree?

The cost of tree removal varies depending on several factors:

  • tree height
  • type of tree
  • number of branches
  • trunk diameter
  • location of the tree
  • access to the tree.

The average costs to remove a tree $1,150. The actual price range for tree removal is $450 for small trees right up to $4,500 for larger trees.

Tree Size Low Price High Price
Small Tree 5 - 6 m $250 $950

Large Tree 9 - 20 m $1,000 $3,500

Some larger trees would include:

  • Radiata pine
  • Angophora
  • Blue Gum

You should leave as many green fronds as possible on the palm. Palms need many green fronds to produce a steady food supply so that the plant can grow. A palm tree cannot stay healthy and build reserves without a considerable number of green fronds.

Avoid pruning your palm plants for cosmetic reasons. Pruning them into shapes or shaving their trunks will weaken the palms.
